A Look inside the Upper Brockley Road Bathroom Project

A Seamless Connection

The Upper Brockley Road project is all about seamlessly connecting previously isolated spaces. The design choices for this bathroom were driven by the client's passions for art and their travel experiences—the result – a space that exudes modern elegance and relaxation.

The Primary Goals and Objectives

When designing this bathroom, the primary goals were clear: maximise natural light while maintaining privacy tells Imran from Gruff Architects. To achieve this delicate balance, a slim window facing the garden was installed. Light floods the modestly sized space through the roof light with a mirrored reveal, complemented by a bespoke glass mirrored cabinet.

Colours, Materials, and Textures

Neutral and understated, the colour palette in both bathrooms aligns with the overall design philosophy of the house. “The client’s priority was for the space to be relaxing,” Imran notes. Tones in the polished plaster harmonise beautifully with herringbone marble tiles and the elegant concrete sink by Kast, resulting in a calming blend of colours, materials and textures.

Unique Challenges and Creative Solutions

One of the challenges in this bathroom was the presence of steps leading from the second-floor half landing into the family bathroom tells Imran. This design element “eats into the usable space in the bathroom”, requiring a creative solution. “To make up for the lack of vanity unit we designed a bespoke glass cabinet and timber shelf so the sink could remain as a strong visual element in the room.”

The Flor Mini Basin: A Design Gem

The Flor Mini basin became a standout feature in this bathroom as Imran recalls how the clients “loved the aesthetic of the Flor Mini Basin”. In fact, their admiration for the basin was so great that they decided to incorporate a matching one into their lower-level WC (pictured below), creating a consistent and harmonious design element throughout their home. This wall-hung design added an elegant and sleek touch to the modestly sized bathroom, proving that even in small spaces, beauty and functionality can coexist.
