Designing an attic bathroom

Ola’s colourful bathroom renovation created the new master ensuite as part of her loft conversion. Attic bathrooms can be tricky spaces to design as they're often small with sloped ceilings which can feel limiting. Trying to figure out the best layout to maximise the awkward space can be hard but Ola has done a great job of this.

"At one point I considered having a bath here instead of a shower as it could be easier with limited headroom." reflected Ola. "One of the bathrooms in the Airbnb we recently stayed in was almost identical in size but even more limiting, because of the wooden beams. They decided to go with a bath and I’m not gonna lie... I’m 5’7 (170cm) and I struggled."

Choosing to place a walk-in shower where the ceiling is highest makes the most of the limited space and a custom-made glass screen for the enclosure removes any visual barriers which helps to make the space feel bigger.

Small Bathroom Colour Ideas

For this unique space, Ola chose a striking green colour palette with our Elm basin in Ember as a bold pop of contrasting colour. This vibrant colour combination creates an energising effect with the patterned Elm basin creating a striking focal point within the compact space. Using one continuous shade of green from the floor to the ceiling not only looks contemporary but also ensures a constant flow of colour that prevents the eye from being distracted by the awkward angles of the loft conversion. Choosing a wall-hung sink helps to offer the illusion of more space, making smaller bathrooms feel bigger and the use of vertical metro tiles on the wall also helps to increase the feeling of height.

Colour Theory

Often associated with nature, green provides a sense of peace, balance and renewal which makes it a perfect colour choice for bathrooms. Orange on the other hand is an uplifting colour that usually brings a sense of warmth and joy and sits in opposition to green on the colour wheel. This means that when used together, rich tones of green and orange complement each other greatly, creating a bold and dynamic space that can make a lasting impression.
